What is Uveitis?

Uveitis is an inflammation of the uvea, the middle layer of the eye. The uvea consists of the iris (colored part of the eye), ciliary body (produces fluid inside the eye), and the choroid (a layer of blood vessels that nourish the retina). When any part of the uvea becomes inflamed, it can cause discomfort, vision problems, and lead to serious eye complications if not treated promptly.

Types of Uveitis:

The type of uveitis you have depends on which part or parts of the eye are inflamed:

  • Anterior uveitis affects the inside of the front of your eye (between the cornea and the iris) and the ciliary body. It is also called iritis and is the most common type of uveitis.
  • Intermediate uveitis affects the retina and blood vessels just behind the lens (pars plana) as well as the gel in the center of the eye (vitreous).
  • Posterior uveitis affects a layer on the inside of the back of your eye, either the retina or the choroid.
  • Panuveitis occurs when all layers of the uvea are inflamed, from the front to the back of your eye.

What is the Uvea?

The uvea is the middle layer of the eye, located between the outer white part (sclera) and the inner light-sensitive layer (retina). It is a vital part of the eye’s structure, consisting of three components:

  • Iris: The colored part of the eye, which controls the size of the pupil and regulates the amount of light entering the eye.
  • Ciliary Body: Located behind the iris, the ciliary body produces the aqueous humor (the fluid inside the eye) and helps control the shape of the lens, enabling the eye to focus on objects at varying distances.
  • Choroid: A layer of blood vessels located between the retina and the sclera, the choroid provides oxygen and nutrients to the retina, keeping it healthy and functioning properly.

The uvea plays a critical role in maintaining eye health and proper vision by supporting the retina and controlling light entry. Inflammation of the uvea, known as uveitis, can lead to serious vision problems if not treated.

Symptoms of Uveitis

List the common symptoms of uveitis that patients should be aware of, such as:

  • Eye redness
  • Blurred vision
  • Sensitivity to light
  • Eye pain
  • Floaters (spots in vision)

Causes

In about half of all cases, the specific cause of uveitis isn’t clear, and the disorder may be considered an autoimmune disease that only affects the eye or eyes. If a cause can be determined, it may be one of the following:

  • An autoimmune or inflammatory disorder that affects other parts of the body, such as sarcoidosis, systemic lupus erythematosus or Crohn’s disease.
  • Ankylosing spondylitis, a type of inflammatory disease that can cause some of the bones in the spine to fuse, leading to back pain. Uveitis is one of the most common complications of ankylosing spondylitis.
  • An infection, such as cat-scratch disease, herpes zoster, syphilis, toxoplasmosis or tuberculosis.
  • Medication side effect.
  • Eye injury or surgery.
  • Very rarely, a cancer that affects the eye, such as lymphoma.

Treatment Options for Uveitis at LJEI Ambala:

  • Corticosteroid Medications:
Corticosteroids are often the first line of treatment to reduce inflammation in the uvea. These may be administered as:

    • Eye drops (for anterior uveitis)
    • Oral medications (for more severe cases)
    • Injections directly into or around the eye
  • Immunosuppressive Drugs:
For patients with chronic or autoimmune-related uveitis, immunosuppressive medications may be prescribed to control inflammation when corticosteroids alone are not enough.

  • Antibiotics or Antivirals:
If the uveitis is caused by an infection, such as viral, bacterial, or fungal, specific antibiotics, antivirals, or antifungals will be prescribed to treat the infection and reduce inflammation.

  • Laser or Surgical Intervention:
In severe cases of uveitis that do not respond to medication, laser therapy or surgical procedures like vitrectomy (removal of the vitreous gel inside the eye) may be necessary to prevent vision loss.

  • Monitoring and Follow-up Care:
Ongoing monitoring is crucial for managing uveitis to prevent recurrence and manage any potential complications like cataracts, glaucoma, or retinal damage. LJEI offers regular follow-up appointments to ensure the best outcomes for patients.
