Retinopathy Of Prematurity

What is Retinopathy of Prematurity?

ROP is an eye disorder that occurs when the blood vessels in the back of the eye (Retina) grow abnormally. It is most common in premature infants , or those born prior to 31 weeks gestation.
When babies are born prematurely, their retinas, the light-sensitive layers at the back of the eye, may not have developed fully. As a result, abnormal blood vessels can grow in the retina, leading to retinal detachment and potentially causing vision impairment or even blindness if left untreated.

Regular eye examinations and early detection are critical for managing ROP. Treatment options may include laser therapy or injections to stop the abnormal blood vessel growth and prevent retinal detachment. Prompt intervention can significantly improve the chances of preserving vision in affected infants.

Retinopathy of Prematurity is graded according to its severity: Stage I through “Plus” disease (+).

Stage 1: Demarcation line
Stage 2: Ridge
Stage 3: Ridge with the extraretinal fibrovascular proliferation
Stage 4: Retinal detachment “Plus” disease (+)

Why To Choose LJ Eye Institute For Retinopathy Of Prematurity Treatment?

The institute employs state-of-the-art imaging technologies like optical coherence tomography (OCT) and fluorescein angiography (FA) to precisely diagnose and monitor AMD progression. These technologies allow for early detection of pathological changes, facilitating timely intervention.

LJ Eye Institute utilizes PDT, a targeted laser treatment combined with a light-sensitive medication, to selectively destroy abnormal blood vessels in the eye while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue.

LJ Eye Institute specializes in minimally invasive surgical procedures for advanced AMD cases, such as vitrectomy. These procedures aim to remove scar tissue, repair retinal damage, and improve visual outcomes.

How long does retinopathy of prematurity last?
If your child has mild retinopathy of prematurity (Stage 1 or 2), the abnormal retinal blood vessels usually heal on their own sometime in the first four months of life. But if the ROP worsens, he may need treatment.
Can you see with retinopathy of prematurity?
What are the symptoms of ROP? There are no signs of ROP that you can see. In advanced cases of ROP, the retina may partially or completely pull away from its normal position at the back of the eye. This is called retinal detachment — and it can cause vision loss and blindness.
What happens if ROP is not treated?
If severe ROP is untreated and progresses the retina will be either distorted or detached. Both of these problems can have a disastrous effect on vision and may result in a permanent reduction or loss of vision which cannot be later improved with operations or glasses, etc.
At what stage is ROP treated?
If ROP is in zone I, or if it is Stage 3 with plus disease, or aggressive posterior ROP is present, urgent treatment is needed as the disease is very likely to progress to retinal detachment.
What is the last stage of retinopathy?
The most severe stage of Diabetic Retinopathy is Proliferative Diabetic Retinopathy. There is extensive damage to the eye’s blood vessels and worsening circulation inside the eye. In response, the retina grows new blood vessels, but they tend to have abnormal formation and can cause severe damage.
Can babies with ROP see?

ROP can range from mild to severe. Mild to moderate – babies see normally for their age and have no symptoms. ROP may go away when the blood vessels finish growing. These babies should not have vision loss or scarring.

How does oxygen cause ROP?
ROP is believed to occur because of an increase in angiogenic factors caused after a preterm infant is no longer in supplemental oxygen and the avascular retina becomes hypoxic. Therefore, the extent of avascularized retina may be important.
What is laser surgery for ROP in preemies?
Laser surgery is the most common type of ROP surgery and uses a beam of light to create scar tissue on the peripheral retina. Using the laser, the ophthalmologist aims beams of light at the peripheral retina and burns, then scars, the area where abnormal blood vessels have not yet reached.
Does retinopathy go away?
There is no cure for diabetic retinopathy. But treatment works very well to prevent, delay, or reduce vision loss. The sooner the condition is found, the easier it is to treat.

Treatment Of ROP at LJEI

At present, treatment involves targeting specific areas of the retina lacking blood vessels, which becomes necessary only when the disease has progressed to a certain well-defined stage, as less severe forms often resolve on their own. By targeting these areas, the stimulus for abnormal blood vessel growth is eliminated. This treatment is carried out through cryotherapy (freezing the retina using a small pulse) or photocoagulation with laser energy. In rare cases, surgery may be considered to remove scar tissue.
