Diabetic Retinopathy Treatment In India

What is Diabetic Retinopathy?

Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects the eyes. It occurs when high blood sugar levels damage the blood vessels in the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye. Over time, this damage can lead to vision problems and even blindness if left untreated.

There are two main types of diabetic retinopathy:

Non-proliferative diabetic retinopathy (NPDR): In this early stage, small blood vessels in the retina leak fluid or blood, causing the retina to swell or form deposits called exudates. NPDR may not cause noticeable symptoms initially, but it can progress to more severe stages if not managed.
Proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR): In this advanced stage, the damage to the blood vessels triggers the growth of abnormal new blood vessels on the surface of the retina. These new vessels are fragile and can bleed into the eye, leading to severe vision loss or blindness. PDR requires prompt treatment to prevent further damage.

Can you live with diabetic retinopathy?
Yes, You can. Diabetic retinopathy can cause permanent vision loss. ·

You can have diabetic retinopathy and not know it. The condition often has no symptoms in its early stages, which is why an annual eye exam is so important. As it worsens, you may notice symptoms like:

  • Blurry vision
  • Vision that changes from blurry to clear
  • Blank or dark areas in your field of vision
  • Floaters, or dark spots in your vision
  • Poor night vision
  • Colors appear faded
How does diabetic retinopathy affect daily life?
diabetic retinopathy can cause vision impairment. People with this eye disease may be at increased risk of other complications such as glaucoma and retinal detachment.

Common Symptoms:

  • Blurring
  • Spots
  • Flashes
  • Blind spots
  • Distortion
  • Difficulty reading or doing detail work
Does diabetic retinopathy go away by its own?
Sometimes, the spots clear up on their own — but it’s important to get treatment right away. Without treatment, scars can form in the back of the eye. Blood vessels may also start to bleed again, or the bleeding may get worse.
