PRK Surgery in Ambala

Photorefractive Keratectomy (PRK)

Photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) is a type of refractive surgery. This kind of surgery uses a laser to treat vision problems caused by refractive errors. You have a refractive error when your eye does not refract (bend) light properly.

With PRK, your ophthalmologist uses a laser to change the shape of your cornea. This improves the way light rays are focused on the retina. PRK is used to treat myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism.

The goal of photorefractive keratectomy is to correct your refractive error to improve your vision. PRK may reduce your need for eyeglasses or contact lenses. In some cases, it may even allow you to do without them completely.

When should I choose PRK

– If you have dry eyes or thin corneas and want to have refractive surgery, PRK may be a good choice for you. This is because some other types of refractive surgery, such as LASIK, are not recommended if you have these conditions.

– Also, if you have a very active lifestyle or job, PRK may be a better option for you than LASIK or similar procedures. This is because PRK does not involve cutting a flap in your cornea like LASIK and similar surgeries do. If you are highly active, you could accidentally dislodge a corneal flap, causing problems.

– Some people who have certain lenses put in their eyes during cataract surgery may have PRK to fine-tune their vision.

Benefits of PRK Surgery

LASIK offers several distinct advantages over PRK. These include less discomfort and faster recovery. But many people opt for PRK over LASIK because of the key benefits below:

– It’s a Safer Option for People Engaged in High-Impact Activities

Eye trauma can dislodge the flap created from LASIK. This is a severe complication. So, if you are an athlete or military personnel, your eye doctor will likely recommend PRK.

– Reduced Risk of Complications

Blade-free LASIK also reduces the risk of flap complications, such as flap irregularities and infections, compared to traditional LASIK. The more predictable corneal flap thickness achieved with the femtosecond laser decreases the likelihood of induced astigmatism and other flap-related complications.

It’s More Suitable for Patients with Thin Corneas

Since LASIK involves creating a flap, the procedure requires patients to have thicker corneal tissue. If you have thin corneas, you may receive PRK instead.

– It’s More Suitable for Those Who Require Higher Prescriptions

The higher your prescription is, the more corneal tissue your eye surgeon will have to remove. So, if you have thin corneas and need a significant amount of correction, a PRK will be a better option. PRK is often used to correct up to -7.00 diopters (D) for nearsighted people. It can also correct up to +4.00 D for farsighted ones.

– It Causes Fewer Dry Eye Symptoms

The flap creation during LASIK can increase your risk or worsen your dry eye. Researchers believe that the surgery may cause some nerve damage to the cornea when the eye surgeon removes some of the corneal tissues. Another potential cause is inflammation from LASIK. It’s also likely that the new shape of your cornea can impact the way your eyelid interacts with the eye surface. This may affect tear production, leading to dry eye symptoms.

How long after PRK can I see clearly?
After a PRK procedure, it takes a week for the surface cells to grow back on the surface of the cornea. It takes anywhere from two to six weeks for the cells to smooth and allow for clear vision. It can take up to three months for maximum vision after PRK.
How long until I can rub my eyes after PRK?
You should not rub your eyes for 2 months after LASIK and PRK. You do not want to displace the corneal flap in LASIK or loosen the corneal epithelium in PRK.
Can I watch phone after PRK?
Eye care experts advise patients to spend their first 24 hours after the procedure away from screens and lights. It would help if you avoided all visually demanding activities like reading or driving.
Why is my PRK still blurry after 3 months?
Your eyesight will then continue to improve until your vision becomes stable. This may take anywhere from a few weeks to a maximum of six months. Until your vision becomes stable you will. Need to rely on a pair of glasses to assist you with critical distance vision activities – for example, driving when it is dark.
What not to do after PRK?
– Please avoid any eye makeup or creams, for 7 days following your procedure.
– Avoid swimming, hot tubs, gardening and dusty, dirty environments for two weeks.
– Avoid getting water directly into your eye(s). You may shower the day after your PRK procedure.
Why is PRK recovery so long?
PRK has a longer recovery time than popular refractive surgeries like LASIK. The epithelium, which the eye doctor removes in the procedure, needs time to regrow. You can envision the PRK recovery process like a cut in your skin.
What happens if PRK fails?
If your PRK procedure is not successful, this may be an option for you. Also known as the sub-Bowman’s keratomileusis, LASIK uses thin flaps to keep the stromal tissue intact to decrease the risk of corneal ectasia.
Can PRK be done twice?
If you choose to have a second PRK procedure, there’s nothing to worry about. Subsequent/follow-up surgery is usually the same as the original procedure in that the entire epithelium will be removed to allow access to the underlying cornea in order to reshape it.
How painful is PRK?
Increased sensitivity to light, tearing (watery eyes) and burning are common and expected in the first few days. It is normal to have more pain in one eye than the other. The eyes will often feel like they have sand in them and water significantly, until day 3 or 4 after surgery.
Which is better, LASIK or PRK?
LASIK and PRK are equally safe, and both work well. Around 9 out of every 10 people who have one of these procedures have 20/20 or better vision afterward without the need for glasses or contact lenses. If you’re active, you might prefer LASIK because you’ll have clear vision faster.
Why choose PRK over LASIK?
PRK is preferred over LASIK in the presence of certain corneal findings. For example, if your cornea is too thin, or if there is evidence of forme fruste keratoconus. PRK is sometimes chosen if there is moderate to severe dry eye as there is often less postoperative dry eye with PRK.
Who is a bad candidate for PRK?
Patients under 21 or those who are pregnant, nursing, or having pre-existing conditions — including cornea disease, uncontrolled diabetes, cataracts, dry eye syndrome, or advanced glaucoma — are not good candidates for PRK.
What is the failure rate of PRK?
PRK laser eye correction boasts a high success rate. According to the FDA, the average success stands at roughly 95%. That means most individuals who have undergone the PRK procedure enjoy significant improvement in their vision without using corrective lenses.
Which is more risky LASIK or PRK?
Thin Cornea

The reshaping using the laser also requires enough tissue to work with. This makes patients with thin corneas very hard to work with during LASIK. The preferable procedure is PRK since it does not leave a flap on your cornea. Thus, it is much safer and more effective than LASIK in the long run.

How many years does PRK last?
PRK is considered to be permanent. However, it cannot prevent eyes from aging, nor the optical conditions that can develop as a result. If you have PRK surgery at 40 years of age or older, you can expect these changes to occur.
Is PRK better than Contoura?
while both procedures have their merits, PRK holds a slight edge in terms of safety, especially for those with concerns about corneal flap complications or corneal thickness. It’s essential, however, to consult with an ophthalmologist to determine the most suitable procedure for your unique needs.

Why You Should See Cornea Specialist for PRK Surgery?

Performed 4000+ PRK Surgeries

Dr. Vikas Mittal

Ophthalmologists are all cornea trained- but not all are cornea specialists. When getting LASIK surgery you should want the best.

Ophthalmologists can check your eyes for vision related problems and prescribe corrective glasses or contact lenses to rectify nearsightedness (myopia) or farsightedness (hyperopia). They can also check your eyes for diseases and prescribe suitable medicines in the form of drops and ointments for local application or antibiotics to be taken orally. However, LASIK surgery is your sole option if you want to rectify your faulty eyesight and do not want to wear contact lenses or glasses. It is ideal to get this corrective eye surgery done by a cornea specialist; since it involves raising a flap of the corneal surface of your eye and removing microscopic amounts of tissue from the cornea’s underlying stromal layer with the help of excimer lasers.
