Retinal Detachment

What is Retinal Detachment?

Retinal detachment is a serious eye condition where the retina, a thin layer of tissue lining the back of the eye, pulls away from its normal position. The retina is crucial for vision, as it sends visual signals to the brain via the optic nerve. When detachment occurs, it interrupts this process, leading to vision impairment or loss if not promptly treated.

There are three main types of retinal detachment:

1. Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment: This is the most common type and occurs when a tear or hole forms in the retina, allowing fluid from the vitreous (the gel-like substance filling the eye) to seep through and accumulate behind the retina. As the fluid builds up, it separates the retina from the underlying layers of the eye, causing detachment.
2. Tractional Retinal Detachment: In this type, scar tissue or fibrous bands on the surface of the retina pull it away from the underlying tissue. This usually happens due to conditions like diabetic retinopathy or proliferative vitreoretinopathy.
3. Exudative Retinal Detachment: This occurs when fluid accumulates beneath the retina, but without any tears or breaks in the retina. It’s often caused by conditions such as inflammation, tumors, or vascular abnormalities that lead to fluid leakage.

Why To Choose LJ Eye Institute For Retinal Detachment treatment?

LJ Eye Institute provides intravitreal injections of medications like anti-VEGF agents or steroids, which may be adjunctive therapies in certain cases of retinal detachment, particularly those complicated by neovascularization or inflammation.

We do have Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT): This non-invasive imaging technique provides high-resolution cross-sectional images of the retina, enabling precise visualization of retinal anatomy and pathology.

Fundus Photography: Fundus photography captures detailed images of the retina, facilitating documentation and monitoring of retinal detachment progression.

What to avoid with retinal detachment?
Don’t do things where you might move your head. This includes moving quickly, lifting anything heavy, or doing activities such as cleaning or gardening.
How long does retinal detachment last?
After surgery, patients will be curious to know how long it takes to recover from a detached retina. On average, the expected recovery timeline is 2 to 4 weeks, but it can take up to several months for vision to fully recover.
Can you still see after retinal detachment?
As the retina detaches it often causes a dark shadow, like a curtain or veil, in the peripheral vision, which usually progresses to complete vision loss.
Can detached retina heal itself?
If your retina has detached, you’ll need surgery to repair it, preferably within days of a diagnosis. The type of surgery your surgeon recommends will depend on several factors, including how severe the detachment is.
Can a torn retina heal itself?
Very rarely, retinal detachments are not noticed by the patient and can heal on their own. The vast majority of retinal detachments progress to irreversible vision loss if left untreated so it is important to monitor any changes noticed in your vision.
What is the best treatment for a detached retina?
Laser photocoagulation and cryotherapy can also be used to treat a retinal detachment and prevent it from becoming bigger. Surgery is an option if a retinal detachment is big enough that it can’t be treated with laser photocoagulation and cryotherapy alone.
Can a detached retina be repaired twice?

While reattachment surgery for a recurrent retinal detachment is not considered an emergency, we do recommend that it be performed within a few days or, at most, a few weeks of the diagnosis. After two years, the chances for successful reattachment will be reduced significantly, but not completely.
