Thyroid Eye Disease

Thyroid disorders have a significant impact on eyes which is given a collective term known as thyroid eye disease(TED), Clinical symptoms found in TED are eyelid swelling, eyelid retraction, proptosis (protruding eyes), eye muscle restriction, corneal staining and decreased visual acuity. Disease has an active phase lasting around 6 to 18 months followed by a stable phase thereafter. Treatment of active phase include corticosteroids either by oral or l.V route along with lubricants. Orbital decompression is required in active phase if vision drops down i.e development of optic neuropathy.
