What is Cataract (The Problem)?

The eye is like a camera, pupil being like a shutter with a lens which functions similar to a camera lens. The lens bends the light rays to focus objects onto the retina lining the back of the eye. A cataract occurs when there is a buildup of proteins in the lens that make it cloudy. This prevents light from passing clearly through the lens, causing the diminution of vision.

What is Cataract Surgery (The Solution)?

Cataract Surgery removes the natural cloudy lens from the eye and replaces it with an artificial lens or an Intraocular lens (IOL). The most popular technique for cataract surgery is Phacoemulsification (“phaco” means lens and “emulsify” means to break into pieces). Cataract surgery at LJEI is customized. We make the surgery personalized as per each individual eye’s needs. Today, phacoemulsification is performed as an outpatient basis, under topical anesthesia or ‘eye drop’ anesthesia.

We at LJ Eye Institute also use the latest technique in Phacoemulsification cataract surgery called Micro Phacoemulsification (MICS) using the cold phaco technology. Cold phaco is a sophisticated innovation which enables us to do cataract surgery with a micro-incision of less than 1 mm. It helps in faster visual restoration and least post-operative discomfort.

Painless Walk in- Walk out Procedure

Cataract Surgery is a “Walk in- Walk out” procedure. Surgery is mostly done without using anesthesia injections into the eye. Anesthetic drops numb the surface of the eye and the surgery can be performed comfortably and painlessly.

FAQ

Cataract surgery is a procedure to remove the lens of your eye and, in most cases, replace it with an artificial lens. Normally, the lens of your eye is clear. A cataract causes the lens to become cloudy, which eventually affects your vision.

Cataract surgery is performed by an eye doctor (ophthalmologist) on an outpatient basis, which means you don’t have to stay in the hospital after the surgery. Cataract surgery is very common and is generally a safe procedure.

Phacoemulsification is the most common cataract surgery technique performed. Cataract surgery is used to restore vision in patients whose vision has become cloudy from cataracts, a clouding of the eye’s lens.

During phacoemulsification, a surgeon makes a small incision at the edge of the cornea and then creates an opening in the membrane that surrounds the lens. A small ultrasonic probe is then inserted, breaking up the cloudy lens into tiny fragments. The instrument vibrates at ultrasonic speed to chop and almost dissolve the lens material into tiny fragments. The fragments are then suctioned out of the capsule by an attachment on the probe tip.

After the lens particles are removed, an intraocular lens implant, commonly referred to as an IOL, is implanted and positioned into the lenses natural capsule. It is inserted through the tiny corneal incision through a hollowed out tube. Once the lens is pushed through, it unfolds and is positioned in place.

Usually 2-3 it however depends on case to case basis and is tailored according to individual eye.

The patients who have dimness of vision due to cataract and having disturbance in day to day activities.

Cataract surgery is very safe surgery and is termed safer than walking on a road. The complications are very rare and mostly manageable.

Most of the patients can perform routine activities within 1st week after surgery. Although the medications (eye drops) are given for 4-5 weeks.

After cataract surgery, the consultation fees is not charged for 4 weeks after day of surgery at LJ Eye Institute.

Most people are able to return to work or their normal routine in 1 to 3 days. After your eye heals, you may still need to wear glasses, especially for reading.

do not drive until you get the all-clear from your doctor. do not do any strenuous exercise or housework. do not wear eye make-up for at least 4 weeks. do not fly without seeking advice from your doctor.

approximately 90 percent of patients report having better vision after having cataract surgery. After cataract surgery, it’s normal for your vision to be blurry at first as your eye recovers. The blurred vision will typically go away within a few days.

No, cataracts cannot grow back.

However, sometimes after successful cataract surgery, the natural capsule that is left behind becomes cloudy. This causes the vision to become blurry again, much like it was before cataract surgery.

During cataract surgery, the natural cataract-affected lens is removed entirely and replaced with an artificial lens. So, it is actually impossible to get another cataract.

You can resume activities such as washing your face the day after surgery, as long as you are careful to not touch the eye. You shouldn’t splash water directly on your face and instead, use a washcloth to carefully clean. Water should not enter your operated eye.

It is a relatively quick procedure with a fast recovery time that restores a person’s quality of life. Some patients ask if they will have 20/20 vision after the procedure. Most patients can achieve 20/20 vision as long as they have no other conditions.
